6 Things Happy People Do During The First 5 Minutes Of Their Day

For most Career Girls the morning starts with hitting the snooze button at least 3 times, rush into the shower, quickly do your makeup and get a coffee for breakfast on your way to work. You forgot your lunch and putting on deodorant, so you are a bit grumpy and quickly rush into the closest supermarket to spend the money you were actually meant to save.

The first 5 minutes of your day can set your mood for the rest of the day. If you start your morning with an easy and calm morning routine, feeling joyful and refreshed, you are more likely to continue this positive vibe for the rest of your day.

In order to become a happy morning person, try to incorporate these 6 things into your morning routine:

#1 – Eat a satisfying breakfast

I should take notes on this one since I never have breakfast. Everyone knows it is the most important meal of the day. Having a satisfying breakfast gives your body the fuel it needs after a good nights rest. It is the key to feeling more energized for the rest of the day and also has an influence on your concentration and therefore performance at work. So in order to avoid that ‘hangry’ feeling, give yourself a satisfying breakfast every morning.

#2 – Don’t hit the snooze button

This it a tough one, not hitting the snooze button. We use it to hopefully have a little bit more sleep and wake up more energized, but the opposite is often true. Scientists found that hitting the snooze button 9 out of 10 times makes you more tired and is often a part of a larger problem: sleep deprivation. So instead of using your snooze alarm, go to bed 30 minutes earlier in order to get that extra sleep.

#3 – Meditation, prayer or affirmation

Saying something you’re grateful for, something positive to yourself, meditate or say a prayer, it is whatever floats your boat. This helps you to be calm, brings you to the present and is a good way to determine your (positive) mindset for the rest of your day.

#4 – Stay disconnected

No phone, laptop or any other electronic device that connects you to the outside world (try it for at least an hour if you dare!). This is a great way to start your day with a Zen feeling. The e-mails and apps will not go anywhere and you know that most of the times you are not missing out on anything, so use your morning for you and not you and the outside world.

#5 – Exercise

Exercising keeps coming back as an essential part of a positive and successful life. Research shows that by exercising in the morning you will feel moe energized, less stressed and you will be more productive during the day.

#6 – Keep a simple morning routine

Preparation is key! Happy people prepare the night before so they can keep their morning routine simple and don’t need to rush out the door (take notes, Lois!). So prepare you clothes, bag, lunch and if possible your breakfast and you will have a positive low stress morning.

so true…not snoozing and having an extra 10min to do a little bit of stretching, 30sec of planks, even just 10 abs crunches, makes huge difference…but what goes all the way for me is to get a very sleepy hug before I even open my eyes, teddy bear style. Have a good day!!

I’ve been having a lot of success with morning yoga routines. I spend a lot of time in front of my desk, so I’ve started doing a 15 minute yoga routine focusing on strengthening my neck and shoulders. And I’ve noticed that this has really helped me to be in a more relaxed mood!

Still can’t let go of checking my phone in the morning though :)

I need a good breakfast in the morning, nothing else matters until then! These are great tips and I really should make time for appreciation and a little yoga or something everyday.

Thanks I definitely need to ditch my habit of going online within minutes of opening my eyes. I will consider using the extra time saved by exercising.
