How To Turn Your Blog Into A Best-Selling Book

Eirin Kristiansen is only 21 years old and she already has a best-selling book under her belt. A phenomenon in Norway, her blog represents everything she’s interested in and is clean, stylish and readable. I picked her brains on how her blog led to a book and what her blogging tips are.

Why did you start a blog?

I decided to start a blog because I felt like I was walking around with an overload of inspiration when it came to everything from fashion to health and lifestyle. I wanted to share it with someone and create my little online magazine! Thanks to my grandparents I have always been able to see the importance of the small things in life. I think this is important to remind others about that too! We have so many beautiful things to be happy about in life. It’s just not easy to always recognize them, even if they’re right in front of our faces.

What’s your favorite part of blogging?

I believe my favorite part of blogging would be the fact that I can manage my work days and travel a lot. Traveling has taught me so much! Not only about the countries I’ve been visiting, but also myself. I actually went to New York all by myself in December, and I learned so much from that trip. I can really recommend it!

What strategies do you have for your blog?

If you want to blog full time and have it as your main job, you have to create some good strategies and routines. I like to plan all my blog posts for the upcoming week on Sundays! Then I never miss a post and never get stressed out about having nothing to write about. I also use notes a lot! Every time I get an idea about something I would want to write about, I write it down. If I’m on the road, having lunch . . . whatever! It’s genius.

Tell us about your book? Is it an extension of your blog, how did you decide what to put in it?

Well, this fall I launched my bestselling book ‘Miss Independent’ and it does contain a lot of tips for aspiring bloggers. The ones I believe are the most important are:

1. Invest in a good camera and decide what kind of photo ‘style’ you want to go for in the lang haul. Good photos are really important!
2. Ask yourself ‘what would I like to read about my dream blog?’. Write it yourself! Creativity is really important, try to blog about new things and not like the typical ‘what’s in my bag’ posts. I mean it’s okay to write the occasional post like that, but try to combine it with new posts that others haven’t read about yet.
3. Make room for your work. If you don’t have an office, make a home office! Or go to your favorite café and do some people watching in the breaks. (It can be really inspiring!)

How did you grow your following?

That’s a question I find really hard to answer. I really don’t know! But I believe the most crucial was posting frequently (two posts a day) and taking time with the photos and not rushing anything. I really love working with photography! I always try to capture stuff that I find really inspiring myself. And hey, don’t think too hard! The more simple and casual, the better.

How do you balance your days with a full-time blog?

My blog is definitely a full-time job, yes. I have my own office in the city where I go to work every morning, and that has really changed my life. Before I worked from home, but having an office made me so much more structured and organized. I work with my blog from 9-5 every day, also weekends (including meetings, emails, and such) But I mean it’s really fun, so it’s okay not having time off. I love my job! I keep myself inspired and motivated by traveling and thinking about what I want my future to look like. I want to be my own boss forever!

What’s the best blogging advice you’ve ever received?

Use Lightroom to edit your photos! Oh My God! For over two years I only used free services. One photo took forever! In Lightroom, you can just copy the filter you like and paste it. I love love love it! Haha!

What’s your plan for your blog in 5 years?

I have many dreams, and now I can finally focus on them after my successful book launch. My main plan is to build up my brand and make an arena around my blog so that I have something to fall back on the day I decide to quit blogging (won’t happen in a long time, but I believe it’s important to always have a plan B). I dream about creating my own clothing line, doing jobs as an interior consultant, and designing things (Working on it!) I’m really excited for the future!
