Why Is Looking ‘Good’ That Important, Anyway?

Rongrong Devoe

Hi girls, I hope you’re having a lovely week so far. I’m sitting on my couch enjoying a Latte while I’m writing my weekly diary for CGD. This week has all been about appearance for me and me made think a lot about this subject.

I went to London Fashion Week and was amazed by the incredible talent and ability that goes into dressing so effortlessly. It made me think. Is appearance really that important? How is it that we tend to like people more when they look somewhat put together. Actually, while I was at LFW, I was actually a bit embarrassed how shallow this must be. But the fashion industry is a billion dollar industry and at the end of the day we all want to look great. There is a reason there are so many fashion and beauty bloggers out there right? Not to mention all the Youtube tutorials we all love to watch.

Somehow, I think there is a difference between looking ‘good’  and looking like a total glamour babe. We all say we dress up because we want to look good for ourselves and not for other people. But is this really true? Honestly, I feel I dress up, get a regular manicure, hair cut or buy that nice outfit because I want people to take me seriously. I feel especially as a career girl you want to be taken seriously and dress the part.

For me lately it feels like a lot of pressure. The horror when I miss my manicure appointment and I need to make sure my make-up, hair and clothes always look put together. Since I’m representing something, not necessarily as the founder of CGD during business meetings and a personal stylist but you’re actually your own brand.

How do you want the world to see you and what message do you want to send out to the world?

It made me think a lot this week. Are we dressing up for ourselves or because we want to send out a message. Let me know your thoughts and how much time you spend on your appearance.

Btw, for the girls who live in London there’s this app called Wahanda and it’s amazing! A real life changer for scheduling your beauty appointments.

How amazing are the illustrations in this article? Rongrong Devoe is extremely talented! Don’t forget to follow her on  Instagram.

See you next week!

Great post ! It made me think about this whole “looking good” thing and I actually think that we dress up both for ourselves and for the world to see. If you consider yourself in one way then you want other people to consider you the same way. And one way to do that is through appearance.

As much as I don’t admit it, I try to look good because I want to present myself a certain way not JUST for me, but also because I like giving a good impression. (Which is also why it can sometimes take me an hour to get ready lol) You never know who you’re going to meet! I really like this topic though, and I’m glad you mentioned it!
