TV and radio presenter Jameela Jamil is an inspiration to all young girls, being the first ever solo female presenter for Radio 1’s official chart show and writing her own columns for Cosmopolitan magazine, not to mention she is an iconic fashionista. In 2013, she made history as the first woman to host the official chart by herself.
She’s pretty cool, down-to-earth and she’s faced a lot of difficult situations and made the best of them, so here are some reasons why we love Jameela.
#1 She uses fear as a motivator
Recently, she faced a breast cancer scare and quit her dream job as a TV Presenter to evaluate her life. Not that she really needed to, but it was obvious now that she wasn’t fully satisfied with what she was doing. Some things meant a lot more to her and she’s now using her success to talk about more controversial topics and inspire young women.
#2 She’s had many knocks, but she never gives up
As a teenager, she was hit by a car and was told she may never walk again. She was also born with Labyrinthitis, an ear infection which affected her balance and hearing, causing her to spend her childhood in and out of hospital having operations. But nothing was going to stop her from challenging the norms. As an opinionated person who doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind, Jameela wanted to do more.
#3 She knows what’s important
Instead of celebrating her achievements she’s currently using her influence to bring light on equal rights for women and people with disabilities. Not only that, she has started her own events company specifically for young people with disabilities where A-list artists such as Tinie Tempah, Calvin Harris, Coldplay and so many more will be performing. People with disabilities can sit at the front with friends and family and have full accessibility around the gigs and festivals. She’s even managed to get a Subpac technology system so that deaf and blind people will be able to feel the music.
So far her launch event has been a success and she has many more gigs coming up around the UK. It’s so inspiring to see someone in the spotlight put other people’s needs before their own. For another dose of inspirational women why not check out reasons why we love Lena Dunham or get a little inspiration from Audrey Hepburn.
