2. The Rules Of Magic by Alice Hoffman

The Rules Of Magic available here.

The Owens family believe love is a curse. It began in 1620 when Maria Owens was charged with witchcraft for loving the wrong man and spans up until the sixties. Susanna Owens has three children. Franny, Jet, and Vincent. These children are unique, so Susanna puts down some ground rules for them. No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic and no falling in love. All curses were made to be broken though, and Franny, Jet, and Vincent are desperate to find out who they really are and why they’re so unusual.

This book will capture your imagination and give you that warm wintery magical feel you need. This book is a prequel to Practical Magic – so you’re in for a real treat. Buy it here.

3. The Revolution of Marina M

The Revolution of Marina M available here.

New Year’s Eve 1916. Marina Makarova is a privileged young woman growing up in St Petersburg. But she yearns for something more. A greater purpose, a little less privilege. Her country is on the break of the unimaginable, and Marina gets caught up in it. She joins the marches, gets stuck into the violence and falls in love. She’s inspiring, fiery, fierce and despite everything she goes through – determined. She seems at time petulant, but the beauty of this book is that it gives a face to the revolution, it sweeps us along with history and shows how it could have been for any one of us. Buy it here.

4. Strange Magic by Syd Moore

Strange Magic by Syd Moore available here.

While the cover looks a bit scary, this book is actually a new series to get invested in if you loved Harry Potter. It’s a bit of magic for adults, with Rosie Strange inheriting her grandfather’s witchcraft museum in Essex. Of course, along the way she meets a lot of strange characters, and sees things she can’t quite believe. Book one won’t be enough for you, luckily, book two has just been released – so you can power through that one to find out what happened to Rosie next! Buy it here.

  1. Lots of ‘magical’ books here for sure. I’m going to read them in order. Does anyone know if it’s worth it to get a kindle and download these books?

  2. These books sound so interesting, especially the book number 2! Thanks for sharing! :)

  3. If you have a MacBook, you can download Kindle for free. I think they have a free download for PC’s, as well. e-books are generally less expensive than paperbacks, so yes, it is so worth it to download the Kindle app for your laptop or desktop.

Amazon has its own publishing brand, and it attracts both established and new authors. I love having Kindle on my Mac. It is so worth it for bringing you new and interesting authors you might not find elsewhere. If you need a book that’s established in the literary canon and is no longer subject to copyright laws, you can download it from the Gutenberg Project. This site and others have saved me when my private students surprise me with a new book project once I’ve already arrived at their home. Kindle has also let me explore authors I might not have found otherwise.

  4. I use the Overdrive app to take out ebooks from the library. It’s fantastic and I can use it on my iPhone, iPad, etc.

  5. You don’t need a KIndle as such… just a phone that’s big enough to read on, or any tablet. Then you can download the app the same as you would on a computer, but it is a lot handier on ambile device, if you – like me – like reading in bed or on the road.

I bought two new books – The Outcasts of Time by Ian Mortimer and Ginny Moon by Benjamin Ludiwg – a few months ago. They’ don’t involve magic as such, but I couldn’t put them down. I’m also a frequent re-reader of books I already know… and I never have enough space for them, so the Kindle App comes in handy on that count as well (plus you can get samples, so you can try before you buy – and they have free or very economic complete/ collected works by a lot of people). Also, never enough time to read everything…

I’ll probably get a few of those suggestions on my tablet.

  6. These books look fantastic! I’ve added 2-4 to my library wishlist and plan to buy #1.As for my fave book of all time, I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one, so I’ll list my favorite book I’ve read in the last few years which is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

  7. This is listed as a different article on bloglovin and on your site. Its listed as “Make a Plan for 2018 and stick to it” But it redirects to these winter reads. Great article! Any idea where I can find the make a plan one? lol thanks
